Is WhatsApp about to charge your business?

Probably not. From 1 October 2026 Meta charges for customer-service replies on the WhatsApp Business Platform — the API that chatbots, CRM systems and bulk-messaging providers use. The free WhatsApp Business app on your phone is not part of the change. If you read a headline and worried, start with one question: does your WhatsApp run through software, or through your thumbs?

Written 20 September 2026, before the change takes effect. Fee amounts come from Meta’s published rates via your provider — verify there, not in coverage.

What is actually changing

Until now, replying to a customer on the Business Platform was free as long as you answered within 24 hours of their message. From 1 October those service replies are billed per message. The other message types — marketing, utility and authentication templates — were already paid and stay as they were. A conversation a customer starts by tapping one of your click-to-WhatsApp ads stays free for 72 hours, which tells you where Meta would like your budget to go.

South African estimates before the official rate card put a service reply at roughly ten to fifteen cents. Not ruinous — but for the first time, every answer your chatbot or support team sends through the API has a meter running.

Who is affected, in one test

App: you installed WhatsApp Business from an app store, the green icon is on a phone, and a person types the replies. Nothing changes. No fees, no action needed, and anyone charging you to “prepare” for this is selling weather insurance indoors.

Platform: your WhatsApp runs through a chatbot, a shared team inbox, a CRM integration or a bulk-messaging provider. The fees are real and your provider will pass them through — check their pricing page and your next invoice, and ask them to show the per-message rate rather than a bundled number.

If you are on the Platform, three sensible moves

Count your service replies before October. Your provider dashboard has the number. Volume times fifteen cents is your worst-case monthly change — know it before the invoice tells you.

Do not let a bot pad the bill. A chatbot that sends four short bubbles where one message would do now costs four times as much per conversation. Tightening bot scripts is the cheapest saving available.

Re-check whether you need the Platform at all. If your volumes are what one person with the app could handle, the app is free and this whole page stops applying to you.

What this has to do with your website

More than it looks. As WhatsApp conversations become metered, the enquiries that start on your own website — your contact form, your tappable phone number, your free click-to-WhatsApp link — become the cheapest route a customer can take to you. A broken form or a phone number trapped in an image was always losing you enquiries; now the alternative channel has a price on it too. When did you last test your own contact form?
