How do I test whether my contact form works?

Why do forms break without anyone noticing?

Because nothing announces it. The visitor fills in the form, sees a thank-you message, and reasonably concludes you now have their enquiry. They wait for you to call. You see no enquiries and conclude nobody is interested.

Both of you are wrong, and neither of you has any reason to check. That can run for years. I have found forms that had not delivered since a hosting change two years earlier, on businesses that had spent money on advertising the whole time.

How do I test it properly?

1. Use your phone, on mobile data. Turn wifi off. Your office network and your office computer are both known quantities to your systems, and a test from there can succeed when a stranger fails.
2. Use a personal email address. Not one on your own domain. Mail between two addresses on the same domain often takes a shortcut that a real enquiry does not.
3. Write something recognisable. Put the date and the word TEST in the message so you can search for it later and so you do not mistake it for a real enquiry.
4. Fill in every field the way a customer would. A real name, a real phone number. Some forms silently reject anything that looks like a bot.
5. Wait a full working day. Then search your inbox for the word you used, and check spam and junk before concluding anything.
6. Do it again from a different phone if you can. One test proves one path worked. Two is a pattern.

What if nothing arrives?

Work through these in order, because the cheapest causes are the most common.

Is the address it sends to still real?

The most frequent cause by far. The form sends to somebody who left, or to an address that was cancelled when a mailbox plan changed. Nobody thinks to update the website when a person leaves.

Has your hosting or a plugin changed recently?

Sending email from a web server has become considerably harder as mail providers tightened their rules on who may send on whose behalf. A form that worked for years can stop after a host migration, a plugin update, or a change to your domain records that nobody connected to the website.

Is it arriving and being filtered?

Check spam, junk, and any rule you set up years ago and forgot. If your own domain is not set up to say which servers may send on its behalf, your website’s mail can look like forgery to a receiving server, and it will be treated accordingly.

How do I stop it happening again quietly?

Send every enquiry to two addresses on different providers. Most form tools let you add a second recipient. If one provider blocks it, the other still gets it, and the difference tells you something is wrong.

Test it once a month. Put it in the calendar. It takes two minutes and it is the highest-value two minutes you will spend on your website.

Add a route that does not depend on email at all. A tappable phone number and a WhatsApp link keep working when mail does not, and in South Africa a WhatsApp link converts people who would never fill in a form. If your form is the only way to reach you, one failure takes your entire enquiry flow with it.

Can this be checked for me?
